14 Ιουλίου, Παγκόσμια Ημέρα Χιμπαντζη

Εδω και πεντε χρόνια (από το 2018), η 14η Ιουλίου έχει καθιερωθεί ως Παγκόσμια Ημέρα Χιμπαντζη*, τιμώντας μια ημερομηνια ορόσημο που έμελλε να αλλαξει την θεώρηση, όχι μόνο των μη ανθρωπινων ζώων αλλά και της θέσης του ανθρώπινου είδους μέσα στον φυσικό κόσμο. 

Στις 14 Ιουλίου 1960, ενα 26χρονο κορίτσι από την Αγγλία, πάτησε για πρώτη φορά το πόδι του στις ακτές της λίμνης Τανγκανικα, στην σημερινή Τανζανια και το Εθνικό Πάρκο του Γκομπε, για να μελετήσει τους στενότερους συγγενείς μας στο ζωικό βασίλειο, τους χιμπαντζηδες. 

Με την αφορμή αυτής της γιορτής, η 89χρονη σήμερα, παγκοσμίως γνωστη και Πρέσβειρα Ειρήνης των Ηνωμένων Εθνων πρωτευοντολογος, Dr Jane Goodall (Τζέιν Γκουντολ)** μοιράζεται ένα μέρος απο τις σκέψεις, τις γνώσεις και τις εμπειρίες της, και εκφράζει την ευχή για σεβασμό τόσο των χιμπατζήδων που υποφέρουν στην αιχμαλωσία, όσο και των ελεύθερων πληθυσμών τους που απειλούνται με αφανισμό. Εκφράζει επίσης την ελπιδα για αρμονικη συνύπαρξη των σημερινών ανθρώπων με τα άλλα ζώα, σε έναν δικαιότερο και περισσότερο συμπονετικό κόσμο.

Υπολογίζεται ότι, στις αρχές του 20ου αιώνα, υπήρχαν 1-2 εκατομμύρια χιμπαντζηδες κατανεμημένοι σε 25 αφρικανικές χώρες. Σήμερα έχουν απομείνει γύρω στις 340 χιλιαδες. Απειλούνται από την απώλεια των βιοτόπων τους, τις ασθένειες, τον κατακερματισμό των πληθυσμών τους, και την παράνομη εμπορική διακίνηση. Στην αιχμαλωσία, πολλά άτομα εξακολουθούν να χρησιμοποιούνται στις ιατρικές έρευνες ως πειραματοζωα, ως εκθέματα ζωολογικών κήπων και ως κατοικίδια.
